CHRISTMAS TREES AND

CHRISTMAS CHEER

It was his second day in Brookville, and Eddie had already made friends with a group of kids, along with an Elf Ranger. There was also Kevin. Eddie thought Kevin was just a standard bully from the start, but he now knew it was a bit more complicated. Alex seemed to be closest to Kevin. He was nice in a way that felt as though he was making up for the rough attitude that Kevin brought to the group. After the race, he told Eddie that Kevin would warm up. He just didn’t like new people. More than anything, Kevin was a tough kid out of necessity.

Kevin’s father hadn’t been around since he was five, and his two older brothers were pretty big bullies themselves. Alex revealed that they told Kevin time and time again that they didn’t even like him and had tried to convince him to run away about a year ago. After hearing this, Eddie decided that he should give Kevin a break. His brothers sounded evil, and Kevin probably needed another friend more than another enemy right now.

Eddie thought about all of his friends as he walked home, but mostly about how excited they all were for Christmas. Kevin was hesitant and continued to question everything, rolling his eyes and mocking anything Eddie said. It didn’t matter, though—Eddie’s backpack was now empty. All the extra Christmas decorations he could find at home were with his friends now. They would all be taking Christmas home to their families. Despite everything, Kevin accepted a Christmas movie along with some decorations. Maybe, just maybe, Kevin might warm up to him quickly enough to be part of the plan.

Eddie couldn’t contain his excitement. As he passed the lake, he began to run. His legs were moving as fast as he could make them go, but it wasn’t fast enough. His parents promised that they would put Christmas lights on the house today, and then they would pick out a Christmas tree and put it up in the evening. Not only had Eddie spread the word of Christmas to his new friends, but his house was set to be the first Christmas display in town. The lights and the tree that would soon be displayed in the front window would be like a public announcement to everyone, proudly and perfectly saying, “Christmas is here!” The smile on Eddie’s face grew with this thought as he continued to run up the hill toward home.

When Eddie arrived home, his father pointed to their roof and discussed a game plan with Eddie. They always planned how the lights would be displayed before they started decorating the house.

Each year was always different, mostly because they moved so often. That was the only part that Eddie didn’t like. All their moves had caused him to leave so many friends behind. He loved that his father worked as a developer for toys and children’s products because he was always allowed to test new toys that had not yet been released.
